History of Microsoft Encryption password
In Excel and Word 95 and prior editions a weak protection algorithm is used that converts a password to a 16-bit key. Hacking software is now readily available to find a 16-bit key and decrypt the password-protected document instantly.
In Excel and Word 97 and 2000 the key length was increased to 40 bits. This protection algorithm is also currently considered to be weak and presents no difficulties to hacking software.
The default protection in Office XP and 2003 was not changed, but an opportunity to use a custom protection algorithm was added. Choosing a non-standard Cryptographic Service Provider allows increasing the key length. Weak passwords can still be recovered quickly even if a custom CSP is on.
In Office 2007 (Word, Excel and PowerPoint), protection was significantly enhanced since a modern protection algorithm named Advanced Encryption Standard was used. At present there is no software that can break this encryption. With the help of the SHA-1 hash function, the password is stretched into a 128-bit key 50,000 times before opening the document; as a result, the time required to crack it is vastly increased.
Excel and Word 2010 still employ AES and a 128-bit key, but the number of SHA-1 conversions has doubled to 100,000 further increasing the time required to crack the password.

Password recovery attacks

Attacks that target the original password set in Microsoft Excel and Word include dictionary attack, rule-based attack, brute-force attack, mask attack and statistics-based attack.
The efficiency of attacks can be considerably enhanced if one of the following means is applied: multiple CPUs (distributed attack), GPGPU (applicable only to Microsoft Office 2007–2010 documents) and cloud computing. Due to weak passwords, at the moment, cloud computing facilities are capable of unlocking as many as ca. 80% of the files saved in the Office 2007–2010 format. Passwords of sufficient length and complexity typically cannot be brute-forced.
Office 2013 introduces SHA-512 hashes in the encryption algorithm, making brute-force and rainbow table attacks slower. However, it has to be noted that all SHA hash algorithms were never designed for password hashing and are thus not considered secure anymore. Modern, slower and thus more secure hashes such as PBKDF2, scrypt or other KDFs have not yet been implemented in Office.
For xlsx files that can be opened but not edited, there is another attack, as the file format is a group of XML files within a zip, unzipping editing and replacing the workbook.xml file, and/or the individual worksheet XML files with identical copies, except that the unknown key and salt are replaced with a known pair, or removing the key altogether allows the sheets to be edited.
There is specialized software designed to recover lost Microsoft Office passwords on pre-AES encryption.
Ultimately, the security of a password-protected document is dependent on the user choosing a password of sufficient complexity. If the password can be determined through guesswork or social engineering, the underlying cipher is not important.

The Hope Service is dedicated to supporting and empowering young people, their families, carers and networks to enable them to reach their potential by offering a collaborative and therapeutic learning environment.
The Hope Service is a multi-agency service for young people aged 11-18 who are experiencing complex mental health, emotional, social and behavioural needs which could cause a placement breakdown or may require a Tier 4 hospital admission. These needs cannot be met by one agency alone. It is a joint partnership between Health Services, Children’s Services and Education who work together to provide support to young people in the community and through day programme provision. At Hope there is a dedicated team of social workers, nurses, teachers, psychologists, art/drama therapists, psychiatrists, a systemic family worker and activity workers.
The Hope Service is based on 3 sites:
- Hope Epsom in West Park in Epsom
- Hope Guildford on Worplesdon Road in Guildford
- Extended Hope in Redhill
- To prevent or shorten Tier 4 inpatient hospital admissions for young people with mental health difficulties.
- To prevent out of county fostering, community home or residential school placements for young people
- To prevent family breakdown, where a young person is likely to be placed out of county
- To work with young people in the community and/or through the provision of an individualised day programme to meet their specific therapeutic, educational and social needs.
- To support young people to access employment, education or training on exit from Hope.
- To work with young people on a short- term basis, usually for 6 -12 months.
Our staff actively engage with every young person in the service. We listen to what they have to say about their experiences and what they would like Hope to help them to achieve. It is important that young people agree to work with us and are clear about why they have been referred to us for support.
The Hope Service provides intensive community support and intervention to prevent or shorten a young person’s admission to Tier 4 inpatient units and to prevent placement breakdowns within the family, foster care placement or residential setting which might lead to a young person being moved into an out of county placement. We work closely with a range of professionals including Tier 4, Tier 3 CAMHS Clinics, Children’s Services teams, youth services, schools and local support networks to support young people. A Hope Co-ordinator is allocated to work with each young person to build a relationship with them in the community and support their transition into the day programme where it is appropriate.
The day programme offers structured therapeutic, educational and personalised recreational activities to young people. The programme is flexible to ensure that it meets individual needs in a safe, supportive and therapeutic environment. In addition to education, there is a focus on individual and group therapy, art therapy, drama therapy, psychology, cognitive behavioural therapy, anger and anxiety management, assertiveness training and practical social and living skills. The day programme runs daily during term time, and continues with therapeutic work and activities in the school holidays.
Following the successful bid for ‘Innovation Funding’ from the Department for Education, the Extended Hope Service has now opened. The Extended Hope Assessment and Support Service aims to support young people facing emotional and mental health crisis outside of normal office hours or requiring, following assessment, a respite/crisis bed at Hope House for up to 7 days. It is staffed by community psychiatric nurses who will undertake mental health assessments of young people and can offer support to that young person and their family/carer.
The service operates between the hours of 5-11pm, 7 days a week and can be accessed through the emergency duty team on 01483 517898.
